Awesome Movies with Sword Fighting

If you like older movies like myself, you'll love this brilliant 1938 production of England's fearless hero, Robin Hood. The action and affects, while obviously outdated, are fun, lighthearted, and packed full of good sword fighting!

What an amazing film. Few films have the power to make me cry, but this one gets me every time, multiple times. Directed by and starring in by Mel Gibson, Braveheart is an experience.

Count of Monte Cristo is one of my favorite sword fighting movies. I have to resist watching this movie too many times so I don't wear it out, like a favorite song. I love the film's story, acting, action, and character development.

Totally love this movie. I think my best friend and I went to see it three times in the theater the week it came out.

What can I say, it's got sword fighting and Dustin Hoffman. What more could you want?

The Lord of The Rings Trilogy is packed full of awesome sword fighting. When The Fellowship of the Ring came out I was in high school and had just finished reading the trilogy for my second time. At that time I loved the film but had a lot of problems with the liberties they took, probably because the book was so fresh in my mind. These days I'm content with only a single disappointment. Peter Jackson did an amazing job with the trilogy, no one is questioning that, yet I still can't believe they cut Tom Bombadil! His small part in the trilogy is one of the most important ones. Tom's character is the embodiment of Middle Earth's magic. He is the yin to Sauron's yang, unaffected by his magic, and a small glimpse into Middle Earth's deeply intricate past. As you can tell I'm not happy about this inexcusable blatant oversight. And while I'm on a rant, you'll notice The Hobbit isn't on this list. However the Lord of The Rings Trilogy, is, as you already know, an incredibly fantastic journey of magic and epic combat.

What an awesome movie. This is one of my favorite anime, likely due to the exquisitely animated ninja combat sequences. Ninja Scroll is a one of a kind fantasy, rich with subtle plot details and fascinating characters.

I really enjoyed this movie. The sequels less so, which is why they didn't make the list. The first one however is a blast and contains some excellent swashbuckling pirate awesomeness.

Some may not agree this one hits it in the Great category but I love it! Sands of Time is action packed and super sexy. One day I was sick and this was the only movie I had. I watched it three times without getting bored.

Talk about off the charts on the nostalgia scale. The Princess Bride is one of my favorite films of all time. I had it on VHS growing up and I'm sure I've seen it over a hundred times. I used to watch the extravagant sword fighting scene, rewind that section, watch again, repeat, again... So many times that the sword fight section of our VHS got those gray streaks from too much wear. I have met only a few people who haven't seen this film and if you happen to be one of them, you are missing out. The Princess Bride is the classic sword fighting film.

Men in Tights totally makes the list. I think this movie is totally awesome. Not only is it hilarious, it is intelligent, and has really good morals of friendship.

This film is super fun, not to mention almost wall to wall sword fighting. Seriously, more than half of this movie's footage is fencing battles. Scaramouche is witty and epic, and has everything most modern day films are missing.

Classic and critically acclaimed, Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai is a must see for sword fighting enthusiasts. In film school it constantly came up as the quintessential hero story that set the stage for western and fantasy action adventure movies to come. To this day it holds up as one of the best sword fighting films.

Another killer 80's fantasy movie with sword fighting, Willow. This film, and especially the character of Madmartigan, hold a special place in my heart. Like my brother in law said after watching this film for the first time with us, "They really don't make them like that anymore, do they?" Madmartigan is the embodiment of the fantasy rogue sword fighter who undergoes a character transformation into the hero who saves the day. Willow helps too.
